| The two projects
do not simply rely on financial support from overseas. They are pro-active
in seeking assistance and grants from organizations within their own county.
Eleven law courts in Belo Horizonte support the Safe House through implementation of a penalty that directs perpetrators of non-serious crime to pay a fine which is used to the benefit of the community. These fines are often used to purchase food for the Safe House family. Court workers also make donations of toys, food, clothes and cleaning materials. Local food wholesalers donate
surplus stock of fresh fruit & vegetables to the projects. The projects are actively engaged in fundraising activities and are particularly resourceful in using their own existing facilities and also look for initiatives that will benefit the community. These include handmade crafts and jewellery. Taking advantage of their culinary skills, staff of Projeto Bom Pastor have set up a pizza business and supply the local supermarket to generate funds for the project.
