The children live as a family, looked after by house parents and additional staff. The Safe House is under the supervision of Projeto Bom Pastor Following visits to the families of pupils from Projeto Bom Pastor, concerns were fuelled regarding the safety of some children in their own homes. In response the Safe House opened in March 2002 Favoured by the local courts
over the state run children's institutions, the Safe House was catapulted
into national prominence when a family of five severely neglected children
were found abandoned and placed by the court in the Safe House's care.

Eleven of the twelve courts in Belo Horizonte support the Safe House through implementation of a penalty that directs perpetrators of non-serious crime to pay fines which are used to the benefit of the community. These fines are often used to purchase food for the Safe House family. Court workers also make donations of toys, food, clothes and cleaning materials. The Safe House is highly respected and supported by the local authorities. It gives the children stability whilst caring for their physical, educational and emotional wellbeing. Teams of professionals are on call to ensure that the children's medical and psychological needs are also met |
