Norwich's Under-16 goalkeeper Alan Calton had a trial with Leyton Orient in April 2002. This was obviously unsuccessful as Alan, and three other young Canaries, joined Cambridge City's academy scheme in early May 2002. Alan had spent time with Ipswich earlier in his career.

Alan's form for Cambridge City, at youth, reserve and first team level resulted him being given a one year professional contract in June 2003.

Losing his place in the City squad to Spanish-born Edgar Mercade (from Thetford Town), Alan joined Bury Town at the beginning of November 2006.

Alan moved to Wroxham on 7th July 2007
