Martin is a left footed defender from Boston who was an Academy Scholar with Norwich in 1998/99. Released at the end of the season, he joined his hometown club of Boston United. Martin played just one game for the Pilgrims before leaving to enroll as Brighton University to train to become a PE teacher.

Martin joined United Counties side Holbeach in the autumn of 2000. Although still studying at university, Martin agreed terms with Kings Lynn in June 2001 to play for their sides in 2001/02. Martin returned to Sussex with his studies and subsequently joined Hastings Town in January 2002. In July 2003, he re-signed for the Linnets after returning to live in Norfolk. This stay was a short one as by the beginning of August 2003, he had moved on to Spalding.
