Biography

After a number of weeks of contract talks and medicals, Norwegian goalkeeper Orjan Nyland signed for Norwich on 1st February 2021 on a short term contract until the end of the 2020/21 season. This is to be provide goalkeeping cover following injury to Michael McGovern. Nyland was not fully match-fit when signed and was expected not to be first team ready until March 2021. The anticipation was that if the arrangements work for all parties, that his stay could be extended.

After playing for youth teams Mork IL and Volda TI, he joined Hodd in 2007. Nyland did not play in his first year at the club due to the competition from Kim Deinoff and Vebjørn Skeide. Deinoff left Hødd after the 2007-season and for the next two seasons, Nyland was the second choice behind Skeide before Nyland became the first choice during the 2010 season. Regarded as a promising talent, he trained with Rosenberg in 2007, Everton in 2008 and Molde in 2011. He won the Norwegian Cup with Hodd in 2012 and was named Man of the Match.

After 66 games for Hodd, he moved to Molde on a free transfer, who fought off competition from Start and Sogndal. He made 84 appearances for Molde before joining German side FC Ingolstadt 04, newly promoted to the Bundesliga, on 1st July 2015. He made 53 appearances for Ingolstadt.

He joined Aston Villa, then in the Championship, on 7th August 2018 on a three year contract. He made 35 appearances for Villa, including seven in the Premier League but following the signing of  Emiliano Martínez from Arsenal, Nyland fell from the first team and was linked with a move to another team. His contract with Villa was terminated by mutual consent on 5th October 2020.

Nyland represented Norway from under-16 to under-18 level, but was not selected for youth international teams for two years because he didn't play regularly at Hødd. After he became first-choice goalkeeper at Hødd, he was called up for the under-21 team in June 2011 and made his debut for the team in the 1–4 loss against Sweden. He won eight caps at Under-21 level including at the 2013 European Under-21 Championships where Norway finished third and Nyland was included in the Team of the Tournament. He made his full international debut for Norway against Scotland in a friendly on 20th November 2013 and had 28 caps at the time of joining Norwich.

Norwich announced on 23rd June 2021 that Orjan would be leaving the club at the end of June 2021 following the signing of Angus Gunn.

Nyland signed a contract with Bournemouth on 17th August 2021 until the end of the 2021/22 season. Nyland will provide added cover for the Cherries alongside goalkeepers Mark Travers and Will Dennis. He made his debut in the 6-0 defeat to Norwich on 24th August 2021in the Carabao Cup.

He was released by Bournemouth on 31st January 2022 having made just three appearances and was replaced by Freddie Woodman joining on loan from Newcastle. Nyland had a calf injury at the time of his injury and would continue to train with Bournemouth.

On 10th May 2022 he signed a short term deal with Reading. He was released at the end of the season having played 10 games for Reading.

On 9th October 2022 he joined German side RB Leipzig until June 2023 as a replacement for injured Peter Gulacsi and Janis Blaswich. He made 3 appearances.

On 20th August 2023 he moved to Spanish side Sevilla.
