Norwich City attempted to sign Dutch Under-21 striker Maceo Rigters
from NAC Breda in the summer of 2007 after he had impressed in
the UEFA Under-21 Championship where he won the Golden Boot. Norwich
were pipped to the post by Blackburn Rovers who signed him on
a four year deal for an undisclosed fee
However Norwich had a second bite at the cherry when Glenn
Roeder signed Rigters on loan from Blackburn on 19th March
2008 until the end of the 2007/8 season. We're delighted
to be able to bring him to Norwich, said Roeder. We
have beaten off quite a few other Championship clubs [including
Ipswich] that wanted to give him the same opportunity but he
has chosen us. In this division we are a big club, but you don't
often get an opportunity to bring in a player of Maceo's pedigree
to a club that's in the Championship. He's a powerful lad and
technically gifted. He's strong, got pace and, as he showed last
year in the [European U21] Championships for Holland, he was the
leading goalscorer. So he can score goals, which is something
we've been short of.
Rigters began his career with SC Heerenveen making his debut
during the 2002-03 season. After 2 appearances, he transferred
to FC Dordrecht where he made 17 league appearances, scoring eight
goals. He then signed for NAC Breda
Rigters made his first official game appearance in a Blackburn
shirt in a UEFA Intertoto Cup match against FK Vetra on 22nd July
2007. Rigters replaced Benni McCarthy in the 65 minute.
Rigters made his debut for Norwich as a late substitute in the
5-1 victory over Colchester on 22nd March 2008. He set up the
fourth goal for the Canaries which gave Jamie
Cureton his first hat-trick for the Canaries. Unfortunately
he suffered a hamstring injury ten minutes after coming on as
a substitute against Bristol City on 29 March 2008 and thus his
loan spell at Carrow Road came to an abrupt end.
During the early part of the summer of 2008, Rigters was linked
with a permanent move to Norwich but instead signed for Barnsley
on a season long loan on 8th August 2008
