Norwich City youth team trio Phil Smith, James Paterson and Craig Bussens joined Cambridge Regional College in May 2006. Cambridge Regional College is the name of the team to be run as Cambridge United's youth team but comprising staff and scholars from Cambridge City. Cambridge Regional College will play in the Ridgeons League. Phil made his debut for Cambridge United as a substitute in a pre-season friendly against Norwich.

In May 2008, Phil joined Wivenhoe who had been relegated from the Ryman League into the Ridgeons League
